PMI offers two levels of certification to project managers, depending on their level of experience and training. The Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) is designed for project team members and entry-level project managers, as well as qualified undergraduate and graduate students who want a credential to communicate their value in project team performance. Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is for experienced project managers who already have some level of project management training and are looking for advanced project management skills.

(1) What are the requirements for PMI PMP or CAPM certifications?
To be considered for any PMI certification, candidates must first meet specific educational and experience requirements and agree to meet PMI's strict code of professional ethics. The final step to receiving PMI certification is to pass a multiple-choice, 200-question examination designed to measure project management knowledge. PMI certification exam questions are created by other professionals who have already achieved PMI certification. Those who receive PMI certification must demonstrate ongoing project management expertise by completing continuing education requirements. Visit our Knowledge Base and read, "Is Project Management with a PMP Certificate Enough?"

Boston University is the only educational institution on the PMI corporate council and a charter member of the Project Management Institute (PMI®). Our curriculum is compliant with the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®) — meaning that you'll receive expert PMP exam prep help that will help you succeed.

(2) How will PMI PMP or CAPM training help me?
PMI training and certification preparation courses provide instant credibility in terms of your project management skills, including your understanding of and competence in the PMI Project Management framework. PMI certification implies that your project management practices are current with the project management industry best practices and that you will work to remain current as these practices mature over time. Many employers now require that project managers have PMI PMP certification and have gone through project management training.

Boston University offers project management training, certificate programs and exam preparation training for Project Management Institute (PMI) certifications: Project Management Professional (PMP) and Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM).

(3) What is the Project Management Institute’s Body of Knowledge guide?
PMP training is based on the PMI’s Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®) Guide. The PMBOK® Guide is is an internationally recognized standard that provides the fundamentals of project management as they apply to a wide range of projects. It is a living document that is updated every four years to ensure that current and best management practices are captured.

(4) How should I prepare for my PMI PMP or CAPM certification exams?
PMI credentials require you to learn the theory of project management. This theory may be very different from what you have previously learned on the job. Prepare for your PMP courses by doing the following:

  • Be open to learning and understanding alternate views that, at first, may not appear to be the best way to get to project success based on your personal and business constraints and experiences.
  • Read the PMBOK Guide.
  • Practice the techniques with hands-on opportunities and training that allow you to fully understand the PMI theory behind project management.
  • Need additional assistance? PMI PMP and CAPM exam courses help you every step of the way.

It must be stressed that your institutional knowledge gained from your on-the-job experiences may not always reflect the PMI way. Create your own personal learning plan that allows you to recognize the aspects of the PMI theory that you know well and those that are new to you. This personal learning plan will allow you to maximize your time when preparing for the PMI certification test. Then reinforce the theory after attending a prep class by reading and executing additional test prep questions.

(5) How will Boston University prepare me for my PMI PMP or CAPM certification exams? What will the classroom experience be like?
