About BUCEC’s Information Technology Program (ITP)

The Boston University Corporate Education Center (BUCEC) specializes in offering information technology (IT) programs designed to meet the needs of corporations and individuals who seek to become or stay current on the latest technology.

Seminars and courses are taught at client sites, online, at BUCEC and affiliate facilities, and at special IT “boot camps.” BUCEC offers many certificate programs, as well as complete training in Cisco, Microsoft, Oracle and Linux technology. Its programs include the following:

Cisco Training
Cisco is the market leader in local and wide-area networking technology. BUCEC offers training for the following Cisco certification programs:
Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA). Students learn to install, configure and operate LAN, WAN and dial-access services for simple networks.
Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP). Students learn to install, configure, and maintain large, multi-protocol networks.

Microsoft Training
BUCEC, which was named a Gold Certified Partner by Microsoft, offers Microsoft-authorized courses in networking and systems support, programming, relational database technologies, and Web support and development. Courses support professionals who are working with .NET, Exchange, SQL, Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003. BUCEC also provides security training and training in Project 2002, Microsoft’s Web-enabled, Enterprise Project Management platform. BUCEC offers the following Microsoft certification programs:

Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA). Students learn to implement, manage, and troubleshoot existing network and system environments based on the Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 platforms.
Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE). Professionals learn to analyze the business requirements and design and implement the infrastructure for business solutions based on the Microsoft Windows operating system and Microsoft Servers software.
Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA). An MCDBA can lead organizations in the successful design, implementation and administration of Microsoft SQL Server databases.
Microsoft Certified Application Developer (MCAD). MCADs can develop, test, deploy and maintain department-level applications, components, Web or desktop clients, or database and network services using Microsoft tools and technologies.
Microsoft Certified Solution Developer (MCSD). Students learn to analyze, design and develop leading-edge enterprise solutions using Microsoft development tools and technologies, including the Microsoft .NET Framework.
Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician (MCDST). MCDSTs have the skills to successfully support end users.

Oracle Programs
Oracle9i databases offer increased scalability, higher security and greater reliability – capabilities that are more important than ever. BUCEC offers the following Oracle programs:
Oracle Certified Associate (OCA). OCAs have the knowledge to work with database administrators and application developers.
Oracle Certified Professional (OCP). Based on their knowledge of Oracle technology, OCPs increase their earnings by an average of 28%.
Oracle Data Warehouse Administrator. Oracle9i Relational Data Warehouse Administrators learn to work with the special requirements of data warehousing.
Oracle Forms Developer. Individuals trained to use the Oracle9i Forms Developer have the ability to easily and quickly construct sophisticated database forms and business logic.
Oracle Reports Developer. Individuals trained to use the Oracle9i Reports Developer have the ability to use sophisticated logic in their reports processing, providing access to information at all levels within and outside of the organization in a scalable, secure environment.

Linux/UNIX
Chief technologists need experienced talent to run Linux systems, but, because it has only recently been introduced in many corporations, it is difficult to find employees with experience running Linux at the enterprise level.
Linux System Administration Certificate Program. The Linux System Administration program focuses on system administration, network administration, and system resource management. Students learn to configure and install Red Hat Linux operating systems, perform user administration, backup and restore data, administer security, and manage resources.

Other Courses and Seminars

Database
The technology used to manage data is vital to any information system’s architecture. Today, relational databases are the primary data management technology. Businesses also rely heavily on their messaging and collaboration servers, so they need a solid messaging foundation that is scalable, reliable and secure.

Desktop Support Specialist Certificate Program
The role of the Desktop Support Specialist is to minimize downtime by ensuring employees’ desktop computers work well. Support professionals analyze, diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve software and hardware problems on stand-alone or networked PCs.

Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification
Students and entry-level employees and students can enhance their employment opportunities by obtaining certification as Microsoft Office Specialists (MOS). MOS skills are required for positions in industries such as financial services, banking, accounting, healthcare and manufacturing.

Administrative Office Specialist
The Administrative Office Specialist Program, which focuses on building proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite of applications, is designed for students with no prior computer experience who are interested in pursuing an administrative or office support role. It is also designed for those who would like to gain basic computer skills for business or personal use.

Networking and Systems Support
BUCEC offers courses in network infrastructure, network services, operating systems and Web services. Students learn troubleshooting techniques, perform preventive maintenance and disaster recovery, and install many different operating systems. Students can become A+ and Network+ certified through programs sponsored by the Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA).

Programming
To ensure success, software developers must use languages that will:

  • Increase the speed of application development
  • Adapt easily to change
  • Be portable
Programming languages that meet these criteria and that are offered by BUCEC include: .NET, C/C++, Java, Notes/Domino, UNIX and Visual Basic.
Java Technologies Master Certificate Program (Java/J2EE). Along with portability and mobility, Java and J2EE technology provides a secure and reliable environment. Desktop, Web, enterprise information system, cell phone, and smart card applications can all be created and integrated using Java and J2EE as a unified programming model. While becoming a Java Developer or J2EE Enterprise Developer, students can prepare to complete Sun’s Java Programmer certification.

Security Courses and Certifications
Data theft, loss of productivity and decreased profits caused by security breaches have become commonplace. IT Security Pros must be specifically trained to think proactively. Courses available include:
Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). Course work is based on the Common Body of Knowledge (CBK), the compilation and distillation of all information systems security materials collected internationally and of relevance to information system security professionals.
Security Certified Network Professional. BUCEC provides certification through its partnership with the Security Certified Program.

Web Support
BUCEC offers the following Web-related programs:
Web Page Design and Web Graphic Design. Effective Web site designers combine marketing, creative and technical skills. They must understand business and audience needs, and incorporate requirements into a well-designed, functional Web site. Usability is also key. Sites must be easy to navigate, so that visitors can find the information they need quickly and easily.
Web Support & Development. BUCEC teaches students to design Web sites using Java, XML or Visual Basic 6 development and Visual InterDev 6. Students also learn to support Web applications, build e-Commerce business-to-business solutions and stay current of other new developments.

Wireless
The wireless industry’s evolution from voice-centered to data-centered communications is accelerating and is expected to make wireless the next big growth industry. Certification programs for wireless professionals include:
Certified Wireless Network Administrator (CWNA). The CWNA program covers a broad range of wireless networking topics, including how to administer, install, configure, and troubleshoot wireless network systems.
Certified Wireless Security Professional (CWSP). As wireless LANs become more popular, the need to secure them is becoming more critical. The CWSP builds on the foundation of CWNA certification, educating professionals about security threats to wireless LANs.
