Certificate in Publishing
Boston University's Certificate Program in Publishing is designed to educate students on the latest trends, practices, and technologies in publishing. Students may enroll in the Foundations of Publishing course to learn the fundamentals of publishing or earn a Boston University Certificate by also completing the Publishing Workshop curriculum to gain hands-on practical experience in book publishing.
The program is designed for:
- Those who wish to enter the publishing industry
- Publishing professionals who want to take on more significant roles
- Professionals in the corporate or non-profit sector who publish books, magazines, or other intellectual property to enhance branding and organizational credibility
- Self-publishers of freelancers in publishing-related fields
- Career changers seeking to upgrade their credentials
- Individuals who have a strong background in editorial and writing aspects of publishing, but want to gain a full understanding of the business, advertising sales, marketing, and promotion aspects
Classes are held two evenings per week, three-hours per session, over a fourteen-week term.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Students may opt to take the Foundations of Publishing course or earn a Certificate in Publishing by taking both Foundations of Publishing and the Publishing Workshop. In both courses, students receive hands-on instruction from multiple seasoned professionals who ensure that the curriculum reflects the rapid changes that occur in media and publishing.
PUB201: Foundations of Publishing
Students in the Foundations of Publishing course will learn the important fundamentals of the publishing industry, including business strategy, editorial and copyediting principles, design practices, and publishing law and copyright. Students learn concepts applicable to various publishing industries including magazine, e-publishing, and books.
PUB202: Publishing Workshop
Expanding on concepts introduced in the Foundations of Publishing, coursework here covers all aspects of the book publishing industry, including custom publishing, academic and textbook publishing, book marketing and promotion, acquisitions and editorial direction, plus author contract and negotiations. Students who successfully complete the Publishing Workshop after completing Foundations of Publishing are eligible to receive a Boston University Certificate in Publishing.
Whether participating in just the Foundations course or completing both courses for the Certificate in Publishing, students gain hands-on experience in the area of publishing most relevant to their specific interests or career goals.
Students who enroll in both courses up-front are eligible to receive a 20% discount.
BU Certificate in Publishing Requirements
Students must complete both PUB 201 Foundations of Publishing and PUB 202 Publishing Workshop to receive the Boston University Certificate in Publishing. Successful completion of the program requires an overall grade point average of no less than a B- (2.7).
